The landscape of the Mykonian countryside is dry and exceptionally sparse, aesthetically speaking. The round, smooth, nearly polished grayish stones predominate. White farm houses and numerous white chapels spring up everywhere on the island. Trees are rarely encountered, only appearing in a few valleys which are protected from the wind. A second convergence of the circulation network can be noted around the settlement of ano mera.
In intense contrast to the brown and grey of the fields and the rocks are the dazzling white choria, the farmsteads, which consist of a host of smaller buildings arranged side by side. These are areas with strictly specialized uses and functions, which jointly constitute the independed microcosm of farm life.
We can distinguish: the house, usually two or three rooms in a row with a small open or partially covered courtyard, the hey-loft and store-house, the oven, the stavla or cells for the animals, the voidokelli and the hoirokelli, the dove-cote (both dove house and the place for the manufacture of fertilizer) the winch, the lakka, the through for watering the animals, sometimes the wine pressing floor and the trashing floor, and always the church. The choria on Mykonos often lean against or have their foundation on the smooth granite rocks which so typically dot the landscape.
The arrangement is standardized: single houses in alignment often build at different periods, one after the other, which are either shaped in an elongated mass, with perhaps different heights for each different room, or arranged in the form of a Γ or a Π enclosing a small flagstone courtyard on two or three sides. In the first instance, the exterior face, toward the road or the neighboring property, is nearly or completely blind
The characteristics which emphasize the eloquent element of the architecture of the Mykonian chorio, are those which, more than anything else, are viewed as being just as “natural” and indisputably indispensable ecological features as the stone walls, the terraced fields, the rocks and the prickly pear of the island.
